Domain and hosting are 2 things that are related to each other, but their meanings are often confused with each other. Let's discuss them one by one.

Hosting

Hosting is a place to store data on the website. A hosting is stored on a server. Even though they both store data, the difference between hosting and servers is that the server has a hard disk, RAM and processor, the shape and size of which is adjusted to be stored on a server rack.

There are several types of hosting that you can understand, two of which are shared hosting and cloud hosting.

  • Shared hosting is a type of hosting at an affordable price that is used by several websites at once. This means that the hosting you use is on a server that is also used by other people, so the speed of the website is shared by other users.
  • Cloud hosting is a hosting service that is stored on a server and connected via the internet. Therefore, the number of servers used can be more than one server so that when a problem occurs, another server connected to the internet can be a temporary backup until the problem is resolved.

Broadly speaking, when you rent a hosting service, what you get is a data storage service that will later be used for your website, such as data in the form of text, video, audio, images, files and others. Now, let's find out what type of hosting is right for you, from here.

Domain

Domain is a name that has been determined and regulated by a domain name management body. In Indonesia, domain names are regulated by the Indonesian Internet Domain Name Manager (PANDI).

If the website is like a house, then the domain is the home address that replaces the "geographical location" of the house which in this context replaces the IP address (IP address).

A domain name cannot be purchased, you can only pay rent which must be renewed annually.
